It is incredible how the wonderfully cosmopolitan city of Geneva, with its external reputation as an open, liberal and pacifier, can fail to do anything about the two most objectionable behaviours by its citizens.; namely riding their bicycles on the pavement and allowing their dogs to poop anywhere and everywhere without clearing it up.
I am waiting for the time when I dodge a cyclist coming down the pavement and tread in a fresh pile of dog mess. Thankfully this is yet to come to pass. However the fact that people seem to think riding on the pavement is ok, does nothing for my being anxious that they will run over my children, who are not apt to notice when a bicycle comes flying along.
Whilst there are plenty of cycle routes about the city, it seems a stubborn number of the population do not want to get on the roads. If you are afraid of the roads, either learn how to ride properly, which will give you the confidence to ride on the road, or take the bus: don't travel around on the pavement putting small children at risk of injury.
The city council should be doing more to combat this. When we first moved here I heard much about the city's reputation as a great place for children, but these two issues combined seem to rubbish that reputation completely. If the city really cared about its children it would act to increase the opprobrium of dog owners who leave mess, to clear it up, rather than leave it lying around, and to compel dog owners through financial penalties to act responsibly. It would also encourage more cycling education, fine more cyclists who ride on the pavement and make its citizens more aware that neither behaviour would be tolerated. Sadly, as I am marginalised from the social side of city by my language, I have wouldn't know whether they do this or not, and probably neither do many of the offenders...
